This is an example of how the information [unfortunately from a family that had no photographs] is used to compile it into a story - using Illustrations and Footnotes to add any relevant notes and recording sources.

John Eric ________ was the second surviving son of William Thomas ________ and Elizabeth ________[1].   As was common in the middle of the 19th Century, William & Elizabeth's first two children had died in infancy, and, as was the custom of the time, the name of one of the deceased children, Frederick William, was re-used at the next male birth.

illustration 1Extract from Birth, Marriages & Deaths Index.

When John was born at the beginning of 1868[2],  William 28, and Elizabeth 27, had been married for 5 years, his older brother, Frederick William, was just under 2 years of age. Approximately 18 months after John,  Walter was born, followed by William Thomas; George Alfred (died before 2 years of age); Robert Bruce; Florence Elizabeth; Lillian Elizabeth, (both girls dying before 2 years of age) and, finally, at the age of 38, Elizabeth gave birth to her last children, twins Leonard & Joseph[3].

At the age of 3 John was living with his family at 83 New Queens Street, Sheffield. This had formerly been his mother's family home and his maternal grandfather, John ________, Hatter, 68, was living with the family[4]  As shown on the table below, although William Thomas was only in the skilled occupation of Silver Chasing, the family could afford a servant.  It is not known who retained this servant, John ________ or William Thomas.
